FOCOLARE AND LGBTQ COMMUNITY: FROM HATE TO LOVE?

I have just watched Lord of the Ants (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv6v-zIngl8), a film about the horrific treatment of the Italian writer Aldo Braibanti and his young lover Ettore Tagliaferri in Italy in the 1960s.  Braibanti was jailed for 'mental manipulation' (plagio, a crime which has now been abolished in Italy).  According to the film, this action was instigated by the mother and brother (whose motivation seems mainly to be jealousy) of his lover Ettore, who is subjected to a hideous 'cure', consisting mainly of ECT (Electro Convulsive Therapy) which psychiatrists at the time seemed to use for 'conditions' they didn't understand.  This destroys the life of the young man.  Braibanti's prison sentence is reduced to two years because of the herosim he showed as a partisan during World War II.  The film is unsentimental but very realistic.  Underlying it, however, is the passion of the great director, Gianni Amelio, who came out late in life as gay in 2014.  Other superb films of his include Colpire al Cuore e Ladro dei Bambini.

it seems to me that this film would be ideal viewing for the Focolare Movement - and it's President Margaret Karram and Co-president Father Jesus Moran - which has recently expressed a change in heart from its previous cruel and savage homophobia (or has it?: difficult to say).  The current leaders of Focolare will find the film very informative becasue the Focolare Movement - including its foundress, Chiara Lubich* - was very much part of the evil culture represented in the film.   For them, this film is not simply research or background information.  It is part of their history.  They participated in this culture of hatred - and very actively.  I know because I experienced it personally: when I came out to them at the age of 18, they tried to impose on me conversion therapy, an arranged marriage (carried out via the leaders of the movement) and chemical castration.  

In Lord of the Ants, the sincerity and innocence of Ettore's testimony in court during which, ravaged by his 'cure', which clearly hasn't succeed, he publicly affirms his love for the accused - shot in an astonishing single close-up of newcomer Leonardo Maltese as Ettore.  This alone is a heart-breaking condemnation of the cruelty of those who supported such methods - such as the Focolare Movement, and certainly many others in the Catholic Church.  A close friend of mine, a full time member of Focolare was subjected to a so-called 'sleep cure' of his homosexualityat Loppiano: forced to sleep virtually continually for months by taking sleeping pills day and night.  Of course it didn't work - it just made his suffering even worse.  Partly becuase I had witnessed this, I left the Focolare Movement before they could wreak upon me the horrors they had threatened - conversion therapy etc.  Incredibly, rather than becoming more enlightened with the passage of time, Focolare's methods of dealing with homosexual members, got much worse in the 90s and even after the year 2,000.  Conversion therapy, and extremely harsh treatment of LGBTQ people is a crime against humanity (see: https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/crimes-against-humanity.shtml Part1g).  Excuses such as 'we didn't realise' or 'everyone thought the same thing at that time' cannot be used to justify such actions.  The Nazis could equally have said, 'but everyone was anti-semitic at that time'.  

Watching this film is a meditation for the focolarini, not of what other people did, but what they did.  Chiara Lubich herself detested homosexuality so much that she told the young man who underwent the sleep cure mentioned above that she would prefer him to be knocked down by a truck than ever commit a homosexual act.   How can people who preach love indulge in such terrible hatred and cruelty?  Public repentance as a movement is the only satisfying response.  We do not wish to hear any revised preaching or coverups, which many 'new movements' seem to be frantically indluging in at present.   And it appears to me that the new Focolare branch known as 'No-one is Alone'  (https://www.focolare.org/en/2022/11/15/italiano-nessuno-solo/ - interestingly not avaialable in English on the Focolare official website.  Wonder why?)  is a cover-up for past horrors as shown in Lord of the Ants.  How is it possible that an organisation which was encouraging and practising conversion therapy, a crime against humanity, until very recently now claims it is 'accompanying' LGBT people and their parents, according to the Focolare website ('come assicurare un percorso di accompagnamento, per approfondire e vivere il carisma dell’unità' - 'to ensure a process of accompaniment to deepen and live the charism of unity').  You would need to be suffering from Stockholm syndrome to fall for that. 

*It is paradoxical that people who simply will not shut up about desiring to be true Christians, saints even,  will happily watch a murder mystery or a war film (Chiara Lubich was a big fan of the Margaret Rutherford films of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple - not as violent as today's films, but still packed with murders) but would find a film about love between two people of the same sex disgusting.  

FOCOLARI E COMMUNITA LGBTQ: DALL'ODIO ALL'AMORE?

 

Ho appena visto Il signore delle formiche (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv6v-zIngl8), un film sul terribile trattamento riservato allo scrittore italiano Aldo Braibanti e al suo giovane amante Ettore Tagliaferri nell'Italia degli anni Sessanta.  Braibanti fu incarcerato per "manipolazione mentale" (cioe "plagio", un reato ora abolito in Italia).  Secondo il film, questa azione è stata istigata dalla madre e dal fratello (la cui motivazione sembra essere principalmente la gelosia) del suo amante Ettore, che viene sottoposto a un'orribile "cura", consistente principalmente nella TEC (Terapia Elettroconvulsivante) che gli psichiatri dell'epoca sembravano usare per "condizioni" che non capivano.  Ciò distrugge la vita del giovane.  La pena detentiva di Braibanti viene ridotta a due anni per l'eroismo dimostrato come partigiano durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.  Il film è poco sentimentale ma molto realistico.  Alla base, però, c'è la passione del grande regista Gianni Amelio, che nel 2014 ha fatto tardivamente coming out come gay.  Tra gli altri suoi superbi film ricordiamo Colpire al Cuore e Ladro dei Bambini.

Mi sembra che questo film sarebbe la visione ideale per il Movimento dei Focolari - e per la sua presidente Margaret Karram e il co-presidente padre Jesus Moran - che ha recentemente espresso un cambiamento di cuore rispetto alla sua precedente crudele e selvaggia omofobia (ma davvero?: difficile dirlo).  Gli attuali leader dei Focolari troveranno il film molto istruttivo, perché il Movimento dei Focolari - compresa la sua fondatrice, Chiara Lubich* - faceva parte della cultura del male rappresentata nel film.   Per loro, questo film non è una semplice ricerca o un'informazione di base.  È parte della loro storia.  Hanno partecipato a questa cultura dell'odio - e molto attivamente.  Lo so perché l'ho vissuto personalmente: quando mi sono dichiarato come gay all'età di 18 anni, hanno cercato di impormi una terapia di conversione, un matrimonio combinato (realizzato attraverso i leader del movimento) e la castrazione chimica.  Nel Signore delle formiche, la sincerità e l'innocenza della testimonianza in tribunale di Ettore, devastato dalla sua "cura", che chiaramente non ha funzionato, in cui afferma pubblicamente il suo amore per l'imputato - ripresa in un sorprendente primo piano singolo dell'esordiente Leonardo Maltese nel ruolo di Ettore - è avvincente.  

Già solo questo è una condanna straziante della crudeltà di coloro che sostenevano tali metodi, come il Movimento dei Focolari e sicuramente altri movimenti nella Chiesa cattolica, con l'aiuto di medici, psichiatri ecc  Un mio caro amico, membro a tempo pieno dei Focolari, è stato sottoposto a Loppiano a una cosiddetta "cura del sonno" della sua omosessualità, costretto a dormire praticamente ininterrottamente per mesi assumendo sonniferi giorno e notte.  Naturalmente non ha funzionato, ma ha solo peggiorato la sua sofferenza.  Anche perché ho assistito a tutto questo, ho lasciato il Movimento dei Focolari prima che potessero scatenare su di me gli orrori con i quali mi hanno minacciato - terapia di conversione ecc.  Incredibilmente, invece di diventare più illuminati con il passare del tempo, i metodi dei Focolari per trattare i membri omosessuali sono peggiorati negli anni '90 e anche dopo il 2000.  La terapia di conversione e il trattamento estremamente duro delle persone LGBTQ sono un crimine contro l'umanità (vedi: https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/crimes-against-humanity.shtml Part1g).  Scuse come "non ce ne rendevamo conto" o "tutti pensavano la stessa cosa a quel tempo" non valgono per giustificare tali azioni.  I nazisti avrebbero potuto dire: "ma all'epoca tutti erano antisemiti". 

La visione di questo film è una meditazione per i focolarini, non su quello che hanno fatto gli altri, ma su quello che hanno fatto loro.  Chiara Lubich stessa detestava l'omosessualità, tanto da dire al giovane che si sottopose alla "cura del sonno" che avrebbe preferito che fosse investito da un camion piuttosto che commettere un atto omosessuale.   Come possono persone che predicano l'amore indulgere in un odio e in una crudeltà così terribili?  Il pentimento pubblico come movimento è l'unica risposta soddisfacente.  Non vogliamo sentire prediche rivedute o insabbiate, come molti "nuovi movimenti" sembrano fare freneticamente in questo momento.   E mi sembra che il nuovo ramo dei Focolari noto come 'Nessuno Solo' (https://www.focolare.org/en/2022/11/15/italiano-nessuno-solo/ - curiosamente non disponibile in inglese sul sito ufficiale dei Focolari.  Chissà perché?) sia un isabbiamento per gli orrori del passato, come mostrato nel Signore delle formiche.  Com'è possibile che un'organizzazione che fino a poco tempo fa incoraggiava e praticava la terapia di conversione, un crimine contro l'umanita, ora affermi di "accompagnare" le persone LGBT e i loro genitori,  ('come assicurare un percorso di accompagnamento, per approfondire e vivere il carisma dell’unità')secondo il sito dei Focolari.  Bisognerebbe essere affetti dalla sindrome di Stoccolma per cascarci. 

*È paradossale che persone che non tacciono di quanto amano, quanto vogliono essere veri cristiani, o addirittura santi, guardino volentieri un giallo o un film di guerra (Chiara Lubich era una grande fan dei film di Margaret Rutherford su Miss Marple di Agatha Christie - non così violenti come quelli di oggi, ma comunque pieni di omicidi) ma trovino disgustoso un film sull'amore tra due persone dello stesso sesso.  

BOFF ON RATZINGER - ESSENTIAL READING ON BENEDICT XVI BY A (GENUINELY) GREAT THEOLOGIAN, LEONARDO BOFF (PLUS A FEW ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS)

In a recent article, the Brasilian theologian Leonardo Boff, who played a major role in the influentiual field of Liberation Theology, offers important insights into the figure of Joseph Ratzinger who dominated the Catholic Church for so many years, first as the Grand Inquisitor and Enforcer of Pope John Paul II, and later as Pope Benedict XVI, although in John Paul's latter years Ratzinger was already running the show. As one of the many prophetic figures in Catholic theology who were silenced by Ratzinger (and, in Boff's case, ultimately driven from the priesthood), Boff knew Ratzinger well, first as an academic and later as a implacable opponent. His testimony is important among the mass of sycophantic material that has appeared in the press - liberal and conservative - so that the true and, in the view of many, deeply harmful role of Ratzinger in the post-Vatican II Church is preserved for history. Whilst showing respect for the man, Boff points out that Ratzinger's contribution to theology is negligible - he is merely a supporter of traditional Catholic theology, much of it reworked by minds much greater and far-reaching than his (including Boff's, though he doesn't say so). Another aspect one must bear in mind in appraising him as a theologian (for me, conclusive, even if I did rate him as a theologian, though I certainly don't) are his savage attacks on the LGBTQ community in official Vatican documents while he was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He actually stated that while it was wrong to subject members of the LGBTQ community to violence, given their behaviour, they shouldn't be surprised by such violence. His one theological innovation is probably his invention of a second original sin when he referred to homosexuality as 'a more or less strong tendency ordered toward an intrinsic moral evil'.    So he could be creative when he wanted to be but in an absurd manner and certainly in conflict with modern science and psychology - and respectable theology.   One original sin presents enough theological conundrums without inventing another.  Certainly he can be said to have fuelled homophobia on an unprecedented scale, given his influence.  As Pope in 2012, he said that legalising gay relationships will 'actually harm and help destabilize marriage' and undermined 'the future of humanity'. Can a hater be a great theologian?  History would suggest not.  Also problematic in assessing Ratzinger's influence in the past forty years of the Catholic Church are the extreme lengths he went to in order to hide clerical abuse of minors and vulnerable adults, all very well documented.  Boff's article - which rightly focuses on Ratzinger the theologian can be read for free in either German or English here:
